Dr. Joanne Kang is a New York-based Australian pianist and teaching artist praised for her “fleet-fingered virtuosity” and stylistic versatility, garnering acclaim for her performances spanning Baroque to Contemporary repertoire. A prolific prizewinner of national and international competitions and scholarships, she enjoys an international career as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist.
Joanne has collaborated with renowned artists and ensembles including The American String Quartet, The Afield, the American Modern Opera Company, Rocket City New Music, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Julia Wolfe, members of the Silk Road Ensemble, and the late Kaija Saariaho, for the world premiere of her final chamber work Semafor for eight instruments. From 2020–2023, she was the pianist of Carnegie Hall’s celebrated Ensemble Connect—hailed as “one of the strongest ensembles in the city” (New York Classical Review). Joanne has appeared on major stages such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Guggenheim Museum, the Sydney Opera House, Seoul Arts Center, and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
Joanne holds Associate, Licentiate, and Fellowship diplomas from the AMEB Australia, and earned her Bachelor, Master, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, where she was a recipient of the Harold and Helene Schonberg Pianist Scholarship and the International Advisory Board Scholarship. Her academic excellence was further recognized with the Harold Bauer Award and the Helen Cohn Award, honoring her as an outstanding pianist and doctoral graduate.
A passionate educator, Joanne is committed to empowering students and fostering accessibility in music education. As assistant to the late Prof. Phillip Kawin and a Doctoral Teaching Fellow in the Keyboard Skills Department at the Manhattan School of Music, Joanne taught undergraduate and graduate keyboard skills, individual piano lessons, and studio classes. From 2020 to 2024, she also held teaching residencies at Skidmore College (NY) through her work with Ensemble Connect, where she provided private instruction and chamber music coaching. Joanne has curated and performed numerous interactive concerts for NYC public schools and community audiences, integrating performance with education to spark curiosity and creativity.
She currently serves as Director of Absolute Piano Studio in Brooklyn.
Her multimedia work includes video performances for Carnegie Hall’s YouTube channel, including collaborations with FourTen Media showcasing Clara Schumann’s Piano Trio and a commissioned arrangement of “Deep River” by Grammy-winning composer Gabriel Chakarji. Her recent recordings include 1Q84 (ODDSOUND, 2024), a genre-crossing chamber album with cellist Sahara von Hattenberger and jazz artists Jim Doxas and Adrian Vedady. In 2025, she joins Canadian ensemble Duo Étrange on their upcoming ATMA Classique album featuring works by Luna Pearl Woolf, and newly commissioned pieces by Canadian composers Airat Ichmouratov and Laurence Jobidon.
